eMachine eSlate 450k Running SuSE Linux 8.1 Professional
Laptop: eMachine eSlate 450k with AMD K6-2 450MHz CPU, 256 MB RAM
The eSlate 450k was eMachine's second laptop, the first being the slower 400k model. These were built to run MSWin98se, but, didn't really do the job very well. eMachines had scrapped their old laptop models and had sold out it's remaining stock at such places as the old egghead.com. Since I had acquired a 450k eSlate, I just had to put linux on it. I had tried several distros and found Mandrake, RedHat, and several other distros flat out didn't work. Then I tried SuSE Linux 6.1, which at least booted up on the laptop. I then went and got SuSE 8.1 to have a then-current distro. SuSE Linux 8.1 works with the eMachines eSlate 450k out of the box. What doesn't work is the eSlate's built in modem, or winmodem. Also, no 3d support with the built in video. I chose a PCMCIA modem/ethernet adaptor, which, if installed before installing SuSE Linux, will be detected and installed as the default modem/ethernet hardware. Attempted to update to SuSE 8.2 and the eSlate wouldn't complete the boot sequence nor detect the PCMCIA modem. (I will add to this review as time goes on.)
